I started my online business over 20 years ago for one main reason –

I wanted to be my own boss so I could have control over my life – specifically over my time and my money.

I was 29 the last time I worked for someone else when I was the head of the public relations and marketing department of a private university.

I held that position for over two years, I was very good at it, and I was, by anyone standards “successful”.

And yet, I was miserable.

So, on January 2, 2001, I worked out a deal and left the university with both fear and excitement thudding in my heart.

It was the best decision I’ve ever made and I’ve never looked back.

I launched my marketing business online with exactly ONE client.

At the time, I was in the middle of a divorce, and I was constantly worried about paying the rent on the condo I had moved into.

And I had absolutely NO idea what I was doing when it came to my building my business online beyond email and a little HTML.

There quickly came a time when I thought I was going to have to close my business and go back to work for someone else.

But I was determined NOT to let that happen – ever.

So I joined a group coaching program that was led by a very successful business coach. And no, I couldn’t afford it, so I took a freelance editing gig to pay for it.

Because I knew I also couldn’t afford NOT to join.

I immersed myself in learning from him and other experts about online marketing and running a successful small business.

I didn’t have the luxury of time or patience to go slow – my student loans were in default, my credit score wasn’t even on the baseline, and the collection agencies were calling.

One of the things I learned very quickly was that the “if you build it, they will come” dream is just that – a dream!

I realized that while I had great stuff to offer, I wasn’t going to create the online business I really wanted if I didn’t find my market and grow my audience.

This is the critical component to building a successful online business that so many new business owners don’t get – at least not right away.

And honestly, I didn’t get it right away either. But once I did, everything changed…

And when I made my very first paid offer to a tiny list of less than 100 people (I think it was about 77 actually), 40% of them bought my $47 offer.

And even though those are tiny numbers, it was the life-altering moment I knew I could make this online business work.

By giving my market value, listening to their struggles, helping solve those struggles for and with them, and keeping in consistent touch with them, I knew my online business would replace the income I made at my last job.

And I did just that in less than 18 months (and in the next 18 months I had my first $100k year).

But it doesn’t have to take 18 months or more.

Growing my online business has…

~ enabled me to fill my small 3-day live workshop every year for 8 years resulting in as much as $98k in profits in that one weekend alone

~ enabled me to fill my highest-level coaching programs every year from 2009 to 2021 resulting in over $500k in revenue

~ enabled me to be a guest speaker on hundreds of virtual and some live stages, helping me to grow my audience much more quickly

~ enabled me to successfully launch and operate three different memberships creating recurring revenue streams resulting in over $100k each

~ enabled me to have time to write and publish my first print book (a dream fulfilled ~ and I’m currently working on a 2nd Edition)

My online business brings me more cash than ever before, and as it grows, so does my income and my impact.

And those are just the business results.

And it’s also given me what I personally want most: FREEDOM

More specifically, it’s given me time freedom and money freedom to:

~ be home to raise my kids since the day they were born (they’re now 18 & 15!)

~ pay for their private school education (this is a choice and it’s been worth every penny)

~ care for my aging parents (there were two years where I spent more time with my Dad before he passed than on my business – but my business kept supporting us – and I’m so grateful for that).

~ take our kids on trips to celebrate their 5-year birthdays (we just returned from our 6th trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and more, for our son’s 15th birthday)

~ take the entire summer off and spend it with my family at the lake where I spent my summers growing up (this means everything to me)

~ take off all other school vacations too

~ And during such a precarious and unprecedented time of world crisis during the pandemic, I was here – home, with my kids, for my family, with control over my environment, time and money.

Frankly, that’s priceless…
